Explore the questions at the heart of A Eulogy for Jane Doe: what it means to remember a woman whose identity has been obscured, how the arts can transform evidence of tragedy into acts of remembrance, and why the project has grown beyond unidentified women to confront the broader erasure of women through violence. The Project
The First Exhibition
Phase One: The initial ten illustrations and poems were printed and framed together and shown on exhibition from May through July 2025 at Woo! Studios in San Diego, California.
At the opening, visitors were invited into an immersive experience: QR codes led them to recordings of the poets reading excerpts from their work, accompanied by the haunting voices of a Bulgarian women’s choir lament. The exhibition closed with a talk, poetry reading, and audiovisual experience that became an act of remembrance in its own right.
Monologue, Music, & Dance
Phase Two: The project is currently expanding with ten new illustrations inspired by the belongings of unidentified women. Playwrights, screenwriters, and poets will then respond to each illustration through newly commissioned monologues poems. The next stage is envisioned as a multidisciplinary collaboration among these artists with musicians and dancers, giving a new layer of presence, physicality, and voice to the women. Musicians have already expressed interest in creating original compositions in response to the new work, and funding is now being sought to commission the music and choreography and to compensate the artists who will bring these elements to life.
